Tiguan Electric Tailgate and Rear Opening Checks

An electric tailgate that opens once in a sales video has not completed a useful inspection. Buyers need to know which functions are fitted, whether the opening works consistently and whether the surrounding body is sound. Some Tiguans have different tailgate equipment or no powered operation at all. Start with the candidate specification and test only in a safe clear space, following the relevant instructions.

Record the fitted functions and supplied controls

List the expected opening methods: exterior handle, interior button, key or any verified hands-free function. Do not assume every method exists because it appeared on another Tiguan. Ask for the applicable manual and compare it with the candidate equipment record. A missing optional feature is different from a fitted feature that fails. Check whether keys or settings affect operation before concluding that a motor has failed. Any undocumented retrofit should be identified as such and assessed for safe, supported installation.

Inspect alignment before cycling the mechanism

With the car safely parked, examine panel gaps, hinges, latch area, seals and visible trim. Look for rubbing, chipped paint, inconsistent gaps and evidence of previous adjustments. A technician should assess suspected deformation or damaged attachment points. Powered closure can mask a problem that would be obvious when checking the body carefully, so smooth movement is not the only criterion. Connect suspicious rear-body findings with the accident and structural-repair inspection rather than treating every alignment issue as a simple switch fault.

Observe complete opening and closing cycles

Keep people, luggage and overhead obstacles clear. Use the documented controls and observe movement, unusual noises, pauses and whether the latch secures correctly. Never place a hand or body part in the opening to test obstacle protection; any required functional test belongs with a technician using the approved method. Note the starting conditions and whether the fault repeats. One failed hands-free attempt may reflect operating technique or missing equipment, but repeated inconsistent operation still deserves a clear explanation before acceptance.

Look for water and electrical clues

Inspect accessible luggage-area surfaces, seals and trim for moisture, staining or odour. Water can enter from more than one location, so a wet boot does not automatically identify the tailgate seal. Ask a workshop to trace the cause and assess affected electrical components where warranted. Preserve photos before drying or cleaning. Distinguish an active leak from an old documented repair, and require an appropriate follow-up. A tailgate that now operates does not prove that previous water exposure caused no other damage.

Confirm clearance for daily parking and transport

Measure the usable opening and operating envelope for the buyer's garage or loading routine. If a height-setting feature exists, follow the manual and confirm that the agreed setting behaves as expected. Do not assume the stored limit protects against every obstacle or user action. Families should try the intended luggage with the required seats in use. Keep transport preparation separate: the carrier's loading and securing instructions govern shipping, and the tailgate should not be used to compress an unsecured pile of personal items.

Quote the fault rather than a complete system by default

A problem may involve a control, latch, wiring, supporting hardware or another cause. Request diagnosis before authorising expensive assemblies. Specify correct parts and any required setup, and ask about destination service support. Recheck operation and alignment after work. Include keys, emergency-access instructions and accepted limitations in the vehicle handover. If the equipment is unimportant to the buyer, that may change valuation, but it does not make an unsafe latch or unexplained body damage acceptable.

Example: the seller helps the last part of closure

During a demonstration, the seller pushes the tailgate for the final few centimetres and calls it normal. Ask for the applicable operating instructions and an independent assessment rather than repeating the movement harder. If the car has a genuine fault, the repair scope should explain the cause and include a full retest. If the procedure is correct for that equipment, document it clearly. What matters is a supported explanation, not how confidently someone performs the demonstration.

Buyer checklist

  • Confirm which opening functions are actually fitted.
  • Inspect alignment and latching as well as motor operation.
  • Keep people clear during every demonstration.
  • Trace moisture and repeat the relevant checks after repair.

Questions and answers

Does every Tiguan have a powered tailgate?

No. Verify the exact market, version and equipment of the candidate.

Should I test obstacle protection with my hand?

No. Use the applicable professional test method; never use a body part as an obstruction.
