Identify the actual seating version
Volkswagen's 2021 Allspace announcement describes an optional third row. This is historical model context, not evidence that a particular imported vehicle has that option. Check the VIN-linked build record, actual seats, belts, head restraints and registered seating count. Use the Tiguan version decoder before carrying an Allspace assumption into a Tiguan L, L Pro or another long-wheelbase market version. Photograph the complete cabin arrangement rather than a single folded-seat image. If the seller's description and legal records disagree, pause the shortlist until a responsible party explains the difference.
Try entry and exit with the family arrangement
Place the second-row seats in the positions that will actually be used. Assess the third-row access opening, step-over height, handholds and the ability of the intended passengers to enter and leave without forcing trim or seat mechanisms. A demonstration with every second-row seat pushed forward may not represent a journey with a child restraint installed. Where possible, involve the intended occupants; when that is impractical, collect measured evidence and a continuous video. Do not use a sales photograph to claim that every adult or child will find the rear row comfortable. Record any access limitations as part of the purchase decision.
Keep comfort and restraint suitability separate
Check headroom, knee room, foot placement and the driver's required seating position at the same time. Inspect seat locks, belt operation and head restraints with a qualified inspector. Child-restraint suitability requires the applicable vehicle and restraint instructions, not an assumption that seven seats means seven suitable child-seat positions. The child-seat installation trial deals with permitted positions and the real family combination. Never add an unapproved anchorage or treat a missing belt as a minor convenience issue. Make the legal seating capacity and the family's safe seating needs both mandatory conditions.
Measure luggage with all required seats raised
Load the actual bags, folded pushchair or representative measured boxes with the third row in use. Record the opening, usable floor, parcel-shelf state and whether luggage can be secured as directed. The boot-space guide explains why a brochure volume is not a bag-fit guarantee. Do not solve a failed luggage trial by blocking a passenger position or stacking loose objects in an unsafe location. If occasional airport trips require an alternative transport plan, state that limitation plainly rather than pretending the folded-seat maximum applies to a seven-person journey.
Inspect folding mechanisms and cabin condition
Operate the second and third rows through their permitted positions and return each seat to a positively secured state. Record damaged release handles, sticking runners, missing covers, belt buckles trapped under seats and evidence of poorly refitted trim. Ask the inspector to distinguish normal operation from a fault using the correct instructions. Relate stains, corrosion or electrical concerns to the water and repair history checks rather than diagnosing flood damage from one mark. Obtain replacement-part availability for anything essential before accepting a promise that it will be easy to fix after arrival.
Compare alternative vehicles without mixing years
If the Allspace arrangement fails the family trial, compare a separately identified Tayron or another suitable vehicle using the Tiguan and Tayron comparison. A current European Tayron brochure does not identify a historical China-market Tayron, and a newer product does not automatically offer the same equipment in every country. Keep the tested seat count, luggage arrangement, access and delivered cost in the comparison. Extra body length may help one requirement while making a garage or parking routine harder. Recheck the garage access trial for each candidate.
Agree what the handover must demonstrate
Ask for a dated video showing seat count, each folding mechanism and the luggage arrangement used in the acceptance trial. Include the candidate VIN and legal seating record in the handover pack. If any passenger requirement remains untested, name it instead of treating it as passed. For example, a family needing six occupants plus a pushchair should approve that exact configuration, not a demonstration of five occupants with two seats folded. A seller's substitute vehicle must undergo its own trial. The buying brief should say which compromises are acceptable and which seating or access requirements are non-negotiable.
Buyer checklist
- VIN and legal seat count match
- Third row actually fitted
- Access tried in required arrangement
- Restraint positions checked against instructions
- Luggage tested with seats occupied
- Seat locks and belts inspected
Buyer questions
Is every Tiguan Allspace a seven-seater?
No. The cited 2021 manufacturer material describes the third row as optional. Verify the actual configuration and legal seat count.
Does Tiguan L mean the same seating layout?
No. Check the market, year, build record and actual seating. A long-wheelbase name does not establish seven seats.
Can maximum luggage volume prove family fit?
No. Test the bags and passenger arrangement together. Folded-seat capacity does not describe a trip using the third row.
